The District (09/22/07), as locals call it, or Washington D.C. as the rest of us know it, is home to the ultimate want-it-but-can't-have-it stone, the Hope Diamond. Previously housed in a glassed-over vault, the necklace now resides in a center-of-the-room display and rotates every few seconds so all can get a good look. It is still the most popular exhibit in the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. And no wonder. Would you rather look at old bones, or THIS?

The Big Apple (09/21/07), home to the HBO series _Sex and the City_. It's amazing to see how many jewelry trends were started or revived by this show. One in particular is the Asscher cut for diamonds. First developed about a century ago, this cut is square with wide step facets and deep clipped corners that give an octagonal look to the stone.

In Beantown (09/19/07) on our annual vacation, which is why I haven't written much recently. It hasn't been a great trip for jewelry mavens, though I've seen lots of sterling silver Celtic jewelry in gift shops.
